Diamonds in glass: A dream made of glass and diamonds

Diamonds in glass: A dream made of glass and diamonds

07/01/2008
The world of luxury is so wide that it comes as a surprise when we come across some precious hidden treasures: that was one of the feelings sweeping over me after seeing some samples from DIG (standing for Diamonds in Glass). Born in 2006 in Austria, DIG is the result of the encounter of entrepreneur Natasha Marx and artist Tobias Berger, two talented souls who had their own idea of beauty. The core of that idea was the simple but not obvious association of two key elements: glass and diamonds.

The first collection to be produced was a series of magnificent champagne and wine glasses which gave them immediate fame in the world of design and luxury. And in our opinion their fame is really well-deserved: not only their pieces are breathtakingly beautiful, but they're also hand-made, using a state of the art process that they patented. It is extraordinary to think that every element coming from DIG has been created thanks to the lamp glass blowing technique, without the use of moulds: this means that every single article is unique.

DIG has produced two collections: the first is “Tabletop” whic currently consists of seven items, together with a gathering of glasses, a caviar dish, two serviette rings, and an ashtray. The other is called “Bodytop” and is composed of a large selection of jewellery items, such as rings, colliers, ear pendants and bracelets. Need to say more? How about this: both collections are available in two styles. The series “pure” uses clear glass. The other, called “black-edition”, has the backside of the diamonds embedded in black coloured glass, so that the diamond shines upfront the mysterious dark background.

Do you still want more? DIG has recently made a glass saxophone (with diamonds, of course) for the Thailand Millionnaire Expo, in honour of King Bhumipol of Thailand. This piece of authentic art, golden plated and with 10 diamonds and with its own packaging (harbouring the royal logo) , is estimated at the price of 40.000 Euros. It's really reasonable when you think that a single champagne glass from DIG's «Imperial » collection is estimated at the « modest » price of 65.000 Euros. Yes, you read it well. That confirms the saying that art does not come in cheap.
I am perfectly aware that I'm stating the obvious, but this kind of item is particularly addressed to those hedonists who have just about everything in life and still can't get enough beautiful things... For all the others, and here I'm referring to those rich people eager to make a nice investment, my humble advice is to buy a couple of champagne glasses and store them in their bank vaults.
